Searching for the root causes of human physical degeneration and decay Weston A. Price, DDS, and Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., MD, were medical professionals who became pioneers in the fields of health and nutrition. In a time when most people were concentrating on enjoying the convenience of modern life, Dr. Price and Dr. Pottenger, set out to determine how to make life better in a very real way.
Price, a dentist from Cleveland, Ohio, conducted research through the observation of isolated people groups around the world. Pottenger, a doctor in Los Angeles, California, conducted a 10-year study of the effects of diet on cats. Through observation and study, both men reached the same conclusion, namely that diet and nutrition have a direct effect on physical appearance, health, behavior, and well-being.
The observations that Pottenger made in his studies as he manipulated the diets of cats paralleled those Price observed in the peoples he studied. Diets consisting largely of natural, minimally processed foods containing high quantities of proteins, vitamins and nutrients – termed traditional diets – tend to lead to good health and the production of healthy offspring. Conversely, diets high in sugars (carbohydrates) and processed foods tend to lead to poor physical health.
Doctors Price and Pottenger became acquainted in the 1940s. Because Price’s work confirmed his own findings, Dr. Pottenger, Jr. became chairman of a committee established to disseminate Dr. Price’s findings. That committee later evolved into a nonprofit educational organization that promoted the works of both men. Today, the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation collects and shares the works of Dr. Weston A. Price, Dr. Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., and many other researchers and pioneers in the fields of nutrition, environment, and health.
