In Memory of George E. Meinig, DDS
September 2, 1914 – May 2, 2008
The Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation (PPNF) Board of Directors
wishes to express their deepest sympathy to Dr. Meinig’s family.
Dr. Meinig was born in Chicago, IL on September 2, 1914. He received a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1937. Serving in the U.S. Army in 1943, he became Director of Oral Surgery, getting pilots orally healthy before going into combat. After the service, he managed the dental office of the 20th Century Fox Movie Studio and became the “Dentist to the Stars.”
His areas of expertise were nutrition, root canal therapy, oral surgery, periodontal (gum) disease, temporomandibular joint disturbances (TMJ), gnathology (full mouth reconstruction), and acupuncture therapy. He was president of the Santa Barbara Ventura County Dental Association.
He was active with The Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation, serving on their Board of Directors since 1968. Dr. Meinig possessed a fascination with nutrition and its connection to oral health. He was more than a dental surgeon. More appropriately, he was a doctor of the mouth, realizing the importance of proper eating habits, avoiding sweets, proper regular mouth care, and the importance of eliminating mouth infections. He wrote over 900 articles for the Ojai Valley News over 17 years called “Nutritionally Speaking.” In addition, other articles he authored have appeared in national magazines and his popular book “New” Trition – How to Achieve Optimal Health, published in 1987 was a finalist for the Benjamin Franklin Book Award. This book is still available from The Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation.
Early in his practice, at a time when few dentists treated root canal infections and only a handful of dental schools gave instructions about the subject, Dr. Meinig practiced root canal therapy and taught the subject to others in the dental profession. This led to his being one of the founding members of the American Association of Endodonists (root canal therapists.) During Dr. Meinig’s association with PPNF, he spent 18 months of intensive study of the meticulous 25 year root canal research found in Dr. Weston A. Price’s Dental Infections, Oral and Systemic & Dental Infections and the Degenerative Diseases, Vol. I and II. Because of the many questions coming to PPNF from dentists worldwide regarding these books, Dr. Meinig realized the need for this information to be made public. The thought of the millions of chronic disease sufferers who could be helped was a powerful motivating force for him. In 1993, Dr. Meinig published Root Canal Cover Up. This work presented research, from old and new sources, into book form for the lay public, showing and warning the world of the dangers of root canal filled teeth and chronic jaw bone infection. This was a very controversial position for Dr. Meinig as a founding member of the American Association of Endodontists. But by doing so he has been responsible for saving the lives of thousands of people. This will be his greatest legacy. This book has had 8 printings and was recently contracted to be printed in Japanese by the Koushikai, PPNF’s sister organization. This book is still available from PPNF.
Dr. Meinig has had membership and participation in over 30 professional organizations. Dr. Meinig earned fellowships in five scientific groups, and was honored in Who’s Who in California. Extensive lecturing on many of his subjects led him to England, Europe, Mexico, South America, the Bahamas, and many U.S. cities. Twenty six (26) radio and television shows were also part of his prolific sharing of his knowledge.
| Dr. Meinig was responsible for establishing PPNF’s Living Memorial Program 30 years ago. We invite everyone to join the PPNF Board of Directors and staff in creating a special Living Memorial for Dr. Meinig. He will be missed, but PPNF promises to keep his book, Root Canal Cover Up in print and available so that his important work will live on, benefiting the lives of many.
